"Soul '69" by Aretha Franklin, released January 17, 1969, on Atlantic Records, paired her soul vocals with a stronger jazz orientation. Tom Dowd and Jerry Wexler produced the album, recorded in April and September 1968 at Atlantic Studios in New York City. It reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B albums chart, her sixth chart-topper there, while peaking at number 15 on the Billboard 200, which ended her Top Five streak on the pop side. The album drew on cover material and produced the singles "Tracks of My Tears," which reached number 21 on the Black Singles chart, and "Gentle on My Mind," which reached number 50. Music journalist Stanley Booth called it "quite possibly the best record to appear in the last five years," though it has since become one of her most overlooked 1960s albums and was reissued on compact disc by Rhino Records in the 1990s.
