"Lady Soul" by Aretha Franklin, released January 22, 1968, on Atlantic Records, ranks among her defining R&B and soul albums. Jerry Wexler produced the record with engineering by Tom Dowd, drawing on sessions recorded at FAME Studios between February and December 1967. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart, also peaking at number 3 on the Top Jazz Albums chart. It produced three major hit singles in "Chain of Fools," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone," while the B-side "Ain't No Way" reached number 16 pop and number 8 R&B. The album sold more than a million copies in the United States and placed at number 75 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, having earlier appeared in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
