"Laughing on the Outside" is the 1963 studio album by Aretha Franklin, released on Columbia Records on August 12, 1963, as her fourth studio album. Robert Mersey produced, arranged, and conducted the sessions, recorded at Columbia Recording Studios in New York and Hollywood in April and June 1963 when Franklin was 21 years old. The album moves through jazz, soul, traditional pop, and R&B and draws on songs from composers including Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington. "Skylark" stands out among the standards, and Franklin also recorded her own co-written composition "I Wonder (Where Are You Tonight)," one of the first times she put one of her own songs on record. Often overlooked in her Columbia catalogue, the album was jointly re-released with "The Electrifying Aretha Franklin" in June 2008, and both AllMusic and Record Mirror rated it three out of five stars.
