Promised Land was the second album drawn from Presley's December 1973 Stax sessions and he wrote none of its ten songs. The title track, a Chuck Berry cover, became a number-14 hit and one of his last strong rock singles, while "If You Talk in Your Sleep" reached number 17. The rest mixes country and R&B from writers such as Larry Gatlin and Waylon Jennings. Felton Jarvis produced. The album topped the country chart in 1975.
"Promised Land" is the twenty-first studio album by Elvis Presley, released January 8, 1975 on his 40th birthday and centered on country music. Felton Jarvis produced the album from December 1973 sessions at Stax Records in Memphis, the same dates that earlier supplied tracks for "Good Times." The Chuck Berry cover "Promised Land" reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK top ten, while "If You Talk in Your Sleep" climbed to number 17 and the flip side "It's Midnight" hit number 9 on the country chart. The album peaked at number 47 on the Billboard 200 and topped both the Billboard Top Country LPs and Cashbox country albums charts, reaching number 21 in the UK. Reviews were generally positive, with AllMusic awarding four stars, and the title track later appeared in the 1997 film "Men in Black."
