How Great Thou Art is Presley's second gospel album and the project closest to his own heart, mixing traditional hymns and Southern gospel standards. He wrote none of the thirteen songs, which came from hymn writers such as Stuart K. Hine (the title track) and Charles Albert Tindley ("Stand by Me," "By and By"). The album closes with "Crying in the Chapel," a leftover from 1960 that had become a number-three hit in 1965. Produced by Felton Jarvis, it won Presley his first Grammy, for Best Sacred Performance.
"How Great Thou Art" is the 1967 gospel album by Elvis Presley, his first non-soundtrack album in over two years. RCA Victor released it on February 27, 1967, with Felton Jarvis producing and vocal support from The Imperials, led by Jake Hess, along with The Jordanaires, Scotty Moore, and Floyd Cramer. The album features the title track "How Great Thou Art," "Crying in the Chapel," "Stand by Me," and "Where No One Stands Alone." It reached number 18 on the Billboard 200 and number 7 on the Top Country Albums chart, and it won Best Sacred Performance at the 1968 Grammy Awards, Presley's first Grammy win. The record was certified Gold in 1968 and reached 3x Platinum by 2010, with roughly 3 million units shipped, marking a strategic shift after the declining returns of his film soundtracks.
