By the Numbers
Frankie and Johnny is the soundtrack to the 1966 riverboat film, built around a Dixieland and ragtime palette to fit its turn-of-the-century setting. Presley wrote none of the twelve tracks; the title song was a new adaptation by Alex Gottlieb, Fred Karger, and Ben Weisman of the traditional folk tune. "Frankie and Johnny" reached number 25 on the Hot 100 and its B-side "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" number 45. Fred Karger oversaw the music for RCA Victor.
"Frankie and Johnny" is the 1966 soundtrack album by Elvis Presley, tied to the film of the same name starring Presley as a riverboat gambler. RCA Victor issued it in April 1966 with Fred Karger producing and leaning on retro Dixieland and ragtime arrangements to match the movie's 19th-century setting. Key tracks include the title song "Frankie and Johnny," the single B-side "Please Don't Stop Loving Me," "Beginner's Luck," and a medley of "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Down by the Riverside," with The Jordanaires, Scotty Moore, Bob Moore, and D.J. Fontana contributing. It was Presley's twelfth soundtrack album and peaked at number 20 on Billboard's Top LP's chart. The RIAA later certified it Gold and Platinum on January 6, 2004.
