By the Numbers
Girl Happy is the soundtrack to the 1965 spring-break film, and unlike most of Presley's movie albums it carries one of his own credits: "You'll Be Gone," which he co-wrote with Red West and Charlie Hodge. The rest came from outside writers, with "Puppet on a String" by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett reaching number 14 and "Do the Clam" number 21 on the Hot 100. A mastering error sped up Presley's voice on several tracks, including the title song. George Stoll oversaw the music for RCA Victor.
"Girl Happy" is a 1965 soundtrack album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor as the music for the 1965 MGM musical romantic comedy of the same name, his eighteenth feature film. Joe Pasternak produced the film and its beach party songs, set in Fort Lauderdale. Key tracks include the lead single "Puppet on a String," the Shelley Fabares duet "Spring Fever," and "Startin' Tonight." "Puppet on a String" reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and it was certified Gold by the RIAA. The film won a fourth-place Laurel Award as a top musical of 1965 and took in about $3,250,000 in US and Canada rentals.
