Steve Sholes produced the record across sessions held from March 1961 to March 1962, with "Steppin' Out of Line" produced by Joseph Lilley. The songwriting team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman dominated the project, and key tracks include "Kiss Me Quick," "Suspicion," and "She's Not You." The album reached number 4 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and topped the UK Albums Chart at number 1. It marked a turning point, as Presley would focus on his film career and not record another non-soundtrack, non-gospel studio album until "From Elvis in Memphis" seven years later.
