By the Numbers
Fun in Acapulco is the soundtrack to the 1963 film, leaning on Latin-flavored material to fit its Mexican setting, and Presley wrote none of its songs. The standout is "Bossa Nova Baby," written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, which reached number eight on the Hot 100. Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett supplied much of the rest, and two non-film tracks were added to round out the album. Joseph Lilley oversaw the music for RCA Victor.
"Fun in Acapulco" is a 1963 soundtrack album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor on November 15 as the music for the Paramount film of the same name, the third of his tropical travelogue pictures after "Blue Hawaii" and "Girls! Girls! Girls!" Joseph Lilley produced the album, which blends Mexican music and pop and features brass arrangements inspired by the popular sound of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Sessions took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood and RCA Studio B in Nashville, with backing from The Jordanaires and The Amigos. Key songs include the lead single "Bossa Nova Baby," which reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, along with "Mexico," "Marguerita," and "Guadalajara." The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, and four of its songs were later collected on the 1995 compilation "Command Performances: The Essential 60s Masters II."
