By the Numbers
King Creole is the soundtrack to Presley's 1958 film and is often cited as the strongest of his movie albums, thanks largely to Leiber and Stoller, who wrote the title track, "Trouble," and "Steadfast, Loyal and True." Presley wrote none of the eleven songs. "Hard Headed Woman," written by Claude DeMetrius, was released as a single and became a number-one pop hit and one of the first rock and roll records certified Gold. Steve Sholes produced the RCA album, which reached number two in the US and number one in the UK.
King Creole is the fourth studio album by Elvis Presley, released in August 1958 on RCA Victor Records and produced by Steve Sholes. It is the soundtrack to the Paramount film of the same name, in which Presley starred as a New Orleans singer, and is widely regarded by critics as the best of the film soundtrack albums that dominated his recording activity through the 1960s. Presley did not write any of the 11 tracks; the material was written specifically for the film by various professional writers and reflects a New Orleans-influenced blend of rhythm and blues, jazz, and rock and roll that connected Presley's Memphis rockabilly roots to a different regional tradition. 'King Creole' (written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller), 'Hard Headed Woman,' 'Trouble,' and 'Crawfish' are among the principal tracks; 'Hard Headed Woman' reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The film, based on Harold Robbins's A Stone for Danny Fisher and directed by Michael Curtiz, is often cited as Presley's finest acting performance, and the album's material was more carefully curated than most of the film soundtracks that followed his military service. King Creole reached number two on the Billboard Best Sellers chart and has been certified platinum in the United States; it was the last Elvis album released before his two-year stint in the US Army, which began in March 1958.
