From Elvis in Memphis is widely regarded as one of the great soul albums and the artistic peak of Presley's comeback, cut at American Sound Studio in 1969 with producer Chips Moman's house band. Presley wrote none of the twelve tracks, instead choosing strong contemporary material: Mac Davis's "In the Ghetto," Jerry Butler's "Only the Strong Survive," and country and soul songs by Dallas Frazier and others. The album reached number one in the UK and number two on the US country chart. Felton Jarvis shared production with Moman.

From Elvis in Memphis is the twenty-fourth studio album by Elvis Presley, released in June 1969 on RCA Victor Records and produced by Chips Moman at American Sound Studio in Memphis. It is generally regarded as Presley's greatest artistic achievement of the post-Army period and the album that briefly reconnected him to the creative vitality of his 1950s recordings after a decade of commercially successful but artistically constrained film soundtrack work. Presley did not write any of the 12 tracks; the material was curated by Moman and covers writers who were part of the Memphis R&B and country soul tradition, including 'In the Ghetto' (written by Mac Davis), 'Suspicious Minds' (Mark James), 'Long Black Limousine,' and 'Wearin' That Loved On Look.' 'Suspicious Minds' reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Presley's first number-one single since 'Bossa Nova Baby' in 1963, and 'In the Ghetto' reached the top ten; the album itself reached number 13 on the Billboard 200. The American Sound Studio sessions are notable for Moman's insistence on a live-performance approach using studio musicians from the Memphis Horns and Chips Moman's regular session band, a recording environment that recalled the energy of the Sun sessions without replicating their roughness. From Elvis in Memphis has been certified platinum in the United States and is consistently cited by critics as the high point of Presley's post-Army recording career and one of the finest soul-influenced recordings of the late 1960s.
