Sleeps with Angels reunites Neil Young with Crazy Horse for a somber, death-haunted record co-produced with longtime collaborator David Briggs. Young wrote every song except "Blue Eden," a group jam credited to Young, Ralph Molina, Frank Sampedro, and Billy Talbot. The mournful title track grew directly out of Kurt Cobain's suicide in April 1994, after the Nirvana singer quoted Young's line "it's better to burn out than to fade away" in his note. The album's centerpiece is the 14-minute "Change Your Mind," an extended guitar meditation that anchors the record's brooding mood.
"Sleeps with Angels" is the 1994 album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, his twenty-second studio record and a rock album recorded at The Complex Studios in West Los Angeles. The title track was inspired by Kurt Cobain's 1994 suicide, and Young said the suicide note struck a deep chord that led him to write music for the feeling. David Briggs, who died the following year, and Young produced the album, backed by Crazy Horse and featuring the extended "Change Your Mind" and "Driveby." It peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the UK Albums Chart, earning gold certification in both the US and the UK. The record received widespread acclaim, including an A-minus from Robert Christgau.
