By the Numbers
Every track on Colorado is written by Neil Young, his preferred mode for a Crazy Horse record, where loose, extended jams matter more than tight composition. It is the first Crazy Horse album to feature Nils Lofgren, who returned to the band after roughly five decades and took over guitar and keyboard duties from the retired Frank Sampedro. Young uses the songs to balance ragged, sprawling workouts like the thirteen-minute "She Showed Me Love" against shorter folk-rock pieces such as "Milky Way" and the environmental plea "Shut It Down." The closing "I Do" frames the album's themes of love and ecological worry in plain, direct language typical of his late-period writing.
"Colorado" is a 2019 rock album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, the band's first studio collaboration with Young since 2012's "Psychedelic Pill" and the first to feature Nils Lofgren on guitar after Frank "Poncho" Sampedro retired due to arthritis. Neil Young produced the record with John Hanlon, recording it over eleven days at a studio near Telluride, Colorado, where the band used oxygen to cope with the 9,200-foot elevation. The album includes "Milky Way," "Rainbow of Colors," "Green Is Blue," and "Help Me Lose My Mind," with socially conscious lyrics touching on climate change, diversity, and unity. The record peaked at number 46 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Americana/Folk Albums chart. Young described the project as "a really special record" created under unique circumstances.
