Data Insight

Silver & Gold is a warm, almost entirely acoustic record on which Neil Young wrote every song, returning to the gentle folk and country-rock voice of his Harvest and Comes a Time albums. Several of the songs are far older than the 2000 release date: "Silver & Gold" dates back to the early 1980s and was attempted in many sessions over the years before Young was satisfied with it, while "Razor Love" was first cut in 1984. "Buffalo Springfield Again" is an openly nostalgic song in which Young looks back fondly on his old 1960s band Buffalo Springfield and wishes he could play with those musicians once more. Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt add harmony vocals, reinforcing the record's unhurried, homespun feel.

"Silver & Gold" is a 2000 folk rock and country rock album by Neil Young, his 25th studio album, recorded at his ranch studio between 1997 and 1999 with Nashville session players. Neil Young produced the record with Ben Keith, who also played pedal steel guitar, alongside Spooner Oldham on piano and Hammond organ, Donald Dunn on bass, and Jim Keltner and Oscar Butterworth on drums. The title track "Silver & Gold," "Good to See You," "Daddy Went Walkin'," and "Buffalo Springfield Again" anchor the acoustic set, with vocal contributions from Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Young noted that once CSNY selected three of his songs for their own project, the remaining tracks "suddenly just fell into place." The album peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200, and its cover photo was shot by Young's daughter using a Game Boy Camera.

What kind of album is Silver & Gold?
It is a mostly acoustic folk and country-rock record, one of Neil Young's quietest and most reflective albums. It is often grouped with Harvest and Comes a Time as part of his gentle, harmony-rich acoustic tradition rather than his loud electric work with Crazy Horse.
