Data Insight

Every song is written by Neil Young alone, which is unremarkable for him, but the album is interesting for where the songs went instead. Shelved in 1977, it holds the first finished versions of “Pocahontas”, “Human Highway”, “Field of Opportunity” and “Captain Kennedy”, all of which he re-recorded for Comes a Time, Rust Never Sleeps and Hawks & Doves over the following three years. The two halves are also two different records: five solo acoustic performances, then five cut with a Nashville band around Ben Keith.

Oceanside Countryside is a Neil Young album recorded between May and December 1977 and shelved, released for the first time on March 7, 2025 through Reprise. It splits into two halves: Oceanside, recorded solo in Florida and Malibu, and Countryside, cut in Nashville with Ben Keith, Rufus Thibodeaux and a rhythm section. Several of its songs later surfaced in other versions on Comes a Time and Rust Never Sleeps.
