Mirror Ball is Neil Young fronting Pearl Jam as his backing band, cut at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle in roughly four days during early 1995. Young wrote every song except "Peace and Love," a co-write with Eddie Vedder, and his working method was to bring in a freshly written song each day and run it down on the spot so the band could learn and track it immediately. That speed gives the record its loose, first-take energy, with Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Jack Irons pushing the long jams on "I'm the Ocean" and "Throw Your Hatred Down." Contractual issues meant the Pearl Jam name could not appear on the cover, so the album is credited to Young alone.
