Every track is a Neil Young original, and the record marks his first full collaboration with Crazy Horse, the band that would shape his loudest and most exploratory work for decades. The tight pop construction of "Cinnamon Girl," built on a double drop D tuning and its famous one-note guitar solo, sits beside two long electric jams: "Down by the River" runs past nine minutes and "Cowgirl in the Sand" past ten, both driven by Young and Danny Whitten trading guitar lines over the band's loose, hypnotic groove. Young reportedly wrote "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" in a single day while sick with a high fever at his Topanga home. The album set the template for Young's career-long split between concise songwriting and extended improvisation.
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is the 1969 album by Neil Young, his first studio collaboration with the band Crazy Horse and a blend of country rock, folk rock, and hard rock. Young wrote the signature songs "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" in a single afternoon while sick with a fever. Young and David Briggs produced the record, backed by Crazy Horse members Danny Whitten on guitar and vocals, Billy Talbot on bass, and Ralph Molina on drums, with additional contributions from violinist Bobby Notkoff. The album peaked at number 34 on the Billboard 200 during a 98-week chart run and earned RIAA platinum certification along with a UK silver award. It later ranked 407th on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the greatest albums and appears on the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" list.
