After the Gold Rush is the third studio album by Neil Young, released in September 1970 on Reprise Records and produced by Young, David Briggs, and Kendall Pacios, the album that established Young's dual identity as both acoustic folk ballad writer and electric rock guitarist, and the first full demonstration of the sonic approach that would define his greatest work. Young wrote all original material; the album's range, from the acoustic lament 'Tell Me Why' and the piano ballad 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' to the distorted guitar work of 'Southern Man' (which inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama' as a direct rebuttal), reflects the particular creative restlessness that would characterize Young's career of deliberate genre-shifting. 'After the Gold Rush' and 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' were the principal tracks; 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' reached the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, Young's first significant chart single. The album reached number 8 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified double platinum in the United States; its combination of environmental themes ('After the Gold Rush'), political commentary ('Southern Man'), and romantic introspection established the thematic range that would sustain Young's career across five decades. Nils Lofgren, then a teenager, appears on the album as a pianist who Young invited into the sessions, and the album is widely regarded as the clearest statement of Young's early artistic identity.
