Homegrown is built entirely from Neil Young originals recorded in 1974 and 1975, written in the aftermath of his breakup with actress Carrie Snodgress. Young assembled the record for a 1975 release but shelved it at the last minute in favor of Tonight's the Night, and it stayed unreleased for 45 years until it finally came out in 2020. Several of its songs surfaced on other records over the years before the full album appeared: "Star of Bethlehem" landed on American Stars 'n Bars in 1977, "Little Wing" on Hawks and Doves in 1980, and "Love Is a Rose" on the 1977 compilation Decade, while a different recording of "White Line" later appeared on Ragged Glory in 1990. Young called the album the missing link between Harvest, Comes a Time, Old Ways, and Harvest Moon.
"Homegrown" is a 2020 album by Neil Young that blends country rock and folk rock, recorded between June 1974 and January 1975 in Nashville, Los Angeles, and London but shelved for 45 years in favor of "Tonight's the Night," which Young released instead. The largely acoustic material features Young on guitar, harmonica, and piano, often solo, with session musicians including Ben Keith on steel guitar, Tim Drummond on bass, Levon Helm on drums, and Emmylou Harris on vocals. Neil Young produced the record with Elliot Mazer, Ben Keith, and Tim Mulligan, and its songs, including "Separate Ways," "Love Is a Rose," "Vacancy," and "Star of Bethlehem," explore Young's breakup with actress Carrie Snodgress. Released June 19, 2020 as part of his Archives project, the album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Young had called it "a very down album," but its belated release drew wide praise.
