Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is the debut and sole studio album by Derek and the Dominos, a double LP released in November 1970 featuring Eric Clapton alongside Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, and guest guitarist Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. The album represents Clapton's most substantial and personal songwriting work to that point: he co-wrote the majority of the originals with Whitlock, and composed the title song 'Layla,' a declaration of unrequited love for Pattie Boyd (then George Harrison's wife), with drummer Jim Gordon, who wrote the famous piano coda. Songs like 'Bell Bottom Blues,' 'Anyday,' and 'Tell the Truth' (co-written with Whitlock) show a songwriter finding his own voice after years of interpreting others. The album also includes covers of Willie Myles, Robert Johnson, Skip James, and Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing,' recorded in tribute shortly after Hendrix's death, alongside Bobby Whitlock's sole original 'Thorn Tree in the Garden.'
