By the Numbers
Fresh Cream split its writing between band originals and blues covers. Jack Bruce wrote or co-wrote the originals N.S.U., Sleepy Time Time (with Janet Godfrey) and Dreaming, while Ginger Baker contributed Sweet Wine (with Godfrey) and the drum showcase Toad. The covers came from Willie Dixon (Spoonful), Skip James (I'm So Glad), Robert Johnson (Four Until Late), Hambone Willie Newbern (Rollin' and Tumblin') and Doctor Ross (Cat's Squirrel). Eric Clapton has no sole writing credit on the album and is listed only for arranging Four Until Late.
Fresh Cream is the debut studio album by Cream, released in December 1966 on Reaction Records in the UK and on ATCO Records in the US. The album established the power trio format in rock, presenting Eric Clapton alongside bassist-vocalist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker in an unprecedented combination of blues, improvisation, and raw electric force. Virtually all of the original material was written by Jack Bruce (often with lyricist Pete Brown), making Clapton's contribution on this record almost entirely that of performer and interpreter rather than composer. Cover versions of Willie Dixon's 'Spoonful,' Robert Johnson's 'Four Until Late,' and traditional material like 'Cat's Squirrel' and 'Rollin' and Tumblin'' ground the album in the Chicago and Delta blues that Clapton had absorbed through his years with the Bluesbreakers. Fresh Cream laid the commercial and artistic groundwork for heavy rock and the British blues explosion, with Clapton's fluid playing serving as the emotional center of the trio's sound.
