Data Insight

Disraeli Gears spreads its writing widely, with Jack Bruce and lyricist Pete Brown behind Sunshine of Your Love (co-written with Eric Clapton), SWLABR, Dance the Night Away and Take It Back. Producer Felix Pappalardi and Gail Collins co-wrote Strange Brew and World of Pain, and Clapton co-wrote Tales of Brave Ulysses with Martin Sharp. This is one of the few Cream records carrying Clapton writing credits, on Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew and Tales of Brave Ulysses, but Bruce and Brown remain the dominant songwriting team. Outside Woman Blues is a Blind Joe Reynolds blues cover arranged by Clapton.

Disraeli Gears is the second studio album by Cream, produced by Felix Pappalardi and released in November 1967 on Reaction Records. The album refined the trio's heavy blues-rock into something more psychedelic and polished, featuring two of their most enduring songs: 'Sunshine of Your Love' (co-written by Jack Bruce, Pete Brown, and Eric Clapton) and 'Strange Brew,' which also bears a Clapton writing credit alongside Pappalardi and his wife Gail Collins. Clapton additionally co-wrote 'Tales of Brave Ulysses' with Australian artist Martin Sharp, making Disraeli Gears his most active songwriting contribution during the Cream years. Jack Bruce and Pete Brown nonetheless remained the primary creative engine, writing or co-writing the majority of the album's material. The record's iconic fuzz-heavy guitar, punchy bass, and soaring vocals became a template for hard rock and helped Cream break through commercially on both sides of the Atlantic.
