Journeyman pairs a small number of Clapton co-writes with songs farmed out to other writers plus blues covers. Clapton co-wrote only Bad Love (with Mick Jones) and Old Love (with Robert Cray); Jerry Lynn Williams supplied four tracks including Pretending and Running on Faith, and the album also covers Ray Charles (Hard Times), Bo Diddley (Before You Accuse Me) and George Harrison (Run So Far). Bad Love topped the Album Rock Tracks chart and won the 1990 Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Journeyman is Eric Clapton's 1989 studio album, produced by Russ Titelman and widely regarded as his strongest collection of solo material since Slowhand. The album won Clapton a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance (Male) for 'Bad Love,' a co-write with Mick Jones of Foreigner that became one of his most successful US singles. 'Pretending,' a powerful co-write with Jerry Lynn Williams, was another major hit, showing Clapton's rock instincts sharpened after the softer 1980s output. Guest appearances by Robert Cray, George Harrison, Cecil and Linda Womack, and Chaka Khan give the album an unusually wide musical canvas. The album also includes covers of Ray Charles ('Hard Times'), Johnny Otis ('Hound Dog'), and a moving reading of 'Before You Accuse Me' (a Bo Diddley/Ellas McDaniel song), balancing the originals with the blues perspective that has always grounded Clapton's work.
