Data Insight

Every one of the fourteen tracks on Me and Mr. Johnson was written by Robert Johnson, and Eric Clapton wrote none of them. The album is a complete collection of Robert Johnson blues covers, recorded by Clapton as a tribute to the Delta blues musician whose work shaped his playing. Clapton co-produced the record with Simon Climie.

Me and Mr. Johnson is Eric Clapton's 2004 tribute album dedicated entirely to the music of Delta blues legend Robert Johnson, covering all of the songs Johnson recorded during his two 1936-1937 sessions. Johnson's influence on Clapton has been documented since the Beano Album days with John Mayall, and this record represents the fullest and most explicit statement of that debt. Clapton wrote nothing on the album, functioning entirely as an interpreter and arranger of Johnson's material: songs like 'Crossroads,' 'Love in Vain,' 'Ramblin' on My Mind,' and 'Sweet Home Chicago' that Clapton had been playing in various forms for forty years. The album reached number six in the US despite being an all-covers blues record, evidence of Clapton's commercial standing. Me and Mr. Johnson pairs naturally with From the Cradle as a complete statement of Clapton's blues lineage.
