Riding with the King is the first full collaboration between B.B. King and Eric Clapton, and its material is drawn mostly from blues standards and vintage B.B. King songs rather than new compositions by the two stars. The title track is a John Hiatt song, and Clapton and producer Simon Climie selected the rest. Clapton contributed little original songwriting, serving mainly as performer, bandleader and co-producer.
Riding with the King is a collaborative studio album by Eric Clapton and B.B. King, released in June 2000 and bringing together two of the most celebrated blues guitarists of the twentieth century. The album blends classic blues covers (among them 'Three O'Clock Blues,' 'Hold On I'm Coming,' and 'Worried Life Blues') with new originals, including the title track written by John Hiatt and the Clapton-King co-written 'Marry You.' King's warm vibrato and declarative phrasing contrast beautifully with Clapton's more restrained, fluid approach, and the mutual admiration between the two is audible throughout. Riding with the King won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album and remains one of the most commercially successful pure blues albums by either artist. The record functioned as both a tribute to the tradition and a reunion, as King had been a major influence on Clapton since his Bluesbreaker days.
