By the Numbers
I Still Do is Eric Clapton's most recent studio album, released in May 2016 and reuniting him with producer Glyn Johns, who had produced Slowhand and Backless nearly forty years earlier. The album's subject matter is largely valedictory: songs about aging, loss, mortality, and the durability of love that reflect Clapton's position as a rock elder statesman in his early seventies. 'I Will Be There' and 'Spiral' are originals that carry the album's most personal emotional content, while covers include Robert Johnson's 'I'll Be Seeing You' and a sensitive reading of J.J. Cale's 'Somebody's Knocking.' 'Can't Let You Do It' (co-written with Glyn Johns's son Ethan Johns) is one of the album's more energetic moments. Glyn Johns's production strips things back to close-miked acoustic performances, giving I Still Do an intimacy and directness that contrasts sharply with the 1980s stadium production of the Collins years.
