By the Numbers
Triplicate is a triple album of thirty Great American Songbook standards, so Bob Dylan wrote none of the songs. It is his first three-disc release, with each disc holding a ten-song themed sequence. Dylan produced it under his Jack Frost pseudonym, extending the standards project of Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels.
Released March 31, 2017, Triplicate was Dylan's third consecutive Great American Songbook covers collection, following Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels. Dylan produced under the Jack Frost pseudonym, recording all thirty tracks live in the studio at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles with his touring band, Charlie Sexton and Dean Parks on guitar, Donnie Herron on steel guitar, Tony Garnier on bass, George Receli on drums, with no overdubs. The album's compositions draw from the Tin Pan Alley tradition with songs by Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and Oscar Hammerstein II, and no original Dylan material appears. Structured as a three-disc set running 95 minutes, it is Dylan's longest studio album. It earned a Metacritic score of 80, a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and charted at number 37 on the Billboard 200 and number 17 in the UK.
