Data Insight

All eleven tracks on Time Out of Mind were written by Bob Dylan, his first album of original songs in seven years. Produced by Daniel Lanois, its dark, atmospheric sound and themes of mortality were widely seen as a late-career rebirth. The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1998.

Released September 30, 1997, Time Out of Mind was Dylan's first album of all-original material since Under the Red Sky (1990), marking one of the most celebrated comebacks in rock history. Daniel Lanois produced, their second collaboration after Oh Mercy, employing distinctive vintage equipment, though Dylan later expressed dissatisfaction with the sound and self-produced all subsequent albums. All eleven tracks were written by Dylan, who composed the bulk of the material through winter 1996 at his Minnesota farm, drawing from blues rock, rockabilly, country, and early blues with Lanois referencing Charley Patton, Little Walter, and Little Willie John as sonic touchstones. It received rapturous reviews, Entertainment Weekly gave it A+ and Pitchfork scored it 9.4 out of 10, and won three Grammy Awards: Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Folk Album, and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "Cold Irons Bound." It charted at number 10 in both the US and UK.
