Data Insight

Fallen Angels is a covers album of twelve classic American standards, so Bob Dylan wrote none of the songs. The writers include Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, and Carolyn Leigh, and every track except Skylark had previously been recorded by Frank Sinatra. It continued the standards project Dylan began with Shadows in the Night.

Released May 20, 2016, Fallen Angels was recorded in 2014 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood during the same sessions that produced Shadows in the Night, with Al Schmitt engineering and mixing. All twelve tracks are cover versions of classic American standards, every song except "Skylark" had previously been recorded by Frank Sinatra, written by composers including Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, and Carolyn Leigh. The band was augmented by a three-piece horn section and guitarist Dean Parks, and critics noted the country-leaning arrangements with restrained picking and pedal-steel guitar gave the material a distinct character from its predecessor. The album received a Metacritic score of 77, peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard 200 and number 5 on the UK Albums Chart, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
