Data Insight

All eleven songs on Planet Waves were written by Bob Dylan with no co-writers credited. It was his only studio album recorded with The Band as his backing group, produced and engineered by Rob Fraboni. The record reached number one on the Billboard 200, the first Dylan album to top that chart.

Released January 17, 1974, Planet Waves was Dylan's first studio album of entirely new material in three and a half years, recorded with the Band in deliberately informal sessions at Village Recorder in Los Angeles from November 2-14, 1973 and produced by Rob Fraboni. The album was timed to precede Dylan's first concert tour since 1966, a reunion with the Band that generated enormous media attention. Dylan wrote all tracks, and critics noted a shift toward laid-back roots rock with openly personal, domestic themes dealing with love, death, and obsession, a departure from the settled Nashville-country tone of his preceding work. It became Dylan's first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, though sales proved modest at around 600,000 copies by year-end relative to the tour's demand. Critics highlighted its openly personal character, linking its emotional content to Dylan's marriage to Sara Dylan.
