Every song on Bringing It All Back Home was written by Bob Dylan, making it an all-original record. It is the album where Dylan began going electric, splitting the LP into an electric first side backed by a band and a largely acoustic second side. The acoustic half carries some of his best-known compositions, including Mr. Tambourine Man and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, while the electric opener Subterranean Homesick Blues became his first US single to chart.
Released in April 1965 and produced by Tom Wilson, the album is composed entirely of original Dylan songs and is widely regarded as the record that created folk rock as a genre. Side one pairs Dylan with an electric rock band, including guitars, bass, and drums, while side two returns to acoustic solo performance, the split itself a statement about the direction Dylan was taking. The electric side's surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyrics signaled a complete break from protest-song conventions, while "Subterranean Homesick Blues" became Dylan's first US charting single, peaking at No. 39. Commercially the album was Dylan's breakthrough in the US, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200, his first LP in the American top ten, and topping the UK charts; it achieved platinum certification in the US. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006 and ranked No. 31 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums.
