By the Numbers
Every track on Another Side of Bob Dylan was written by Bob Dylan, and the producer was Tom Wilson. Dylan recorded the album's original compositions in a single three-hour session on June 9, 1964 at Columbia's 7th Avenue studio in New York City. The record marks a turn away from the protest material of his earlier work toward more personal and introspective songs, with Dylan himself saying there were no finger-pointing songs on it. It contains some of his most enduring compositions of the period, including My Back Pages, It Ain't Me Babe, and Chimes of Freedom.
Released August 8, 1964 and produced by Tom Wilson, the album was recorded in a single three-hour session on June 9, 1964 at Columbia's Studio A in New York City. All tracks are original Dylan compositions, written largely during a February 1964 cross-country road trip and a subsequent European tour, and the album marked a deliberate turn away from the explicit protest songwriting of his previous two records. Dylan performed entirely solo, acoustic guitar, harmonica, and piano on one track, yet critic Tim Riley described it as "a rock album without electric guitars" for its intellectual intensity and controlled delivery. The shift away from folk-political content drew sharp criticism from the folk establishment; Sing Out! editor Irwin Silber publicly accused Dylan of losing touch with ordinary people. The album peaked at No. 43 on the US Billboard 200 but was later reassessed as a crucial transitional work, recognized as the bridge between Dylan's protest era and his surrealist electric period.
