Blood on the Tracks

Blood on the Tracks is the fifteenth studio album by Bob Dylan, released in January 1975 on Columbia Records and produced by Dylan himself. It is widely regarded as his greatest achievement and one of the most emotionally devastating albums in popular music, recorded in the context of his estrangement from his wife Sara and consisting almost entirely of songs about romantic dissolution, longing, and self-examination. Dylan wrote all ten tracks himself; the album is remarkable for its formal sophistication: 'Tangled Up in Blue' employs shifting narrative perspective and tense changes as structural devices, 'Idiot Wind' moves from personal bitterness to civilizational grief within a single song, 'Simple Twist of Fate' applies cinematic dissolve to lyric form. This demonstrated that Dylan's literary ambition had deepened rather than diminished during his relative commercial absence of the early 1970s. The album was originally recorded in New York in September 1974 with a specific group of session musicians; Dylan then recalled the masters and re-recorded five tracks in Minneapolis with local musicians whose more uptempo arrangements appear on the released version, creating a hybrid between two different recordings of the same album. Blood on the Tracks reached number one on the Billboard 200 and the Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest Albums list placed it at number 16, it is among the small number of albums that critics routinely place in the top five or ten all-time. The album also stands as the high-water mark of the confessional singer-songwriter tradition that had emerged through Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor in the years preceding it.
