By the Numbers
Per Wikipedia, all tracks on Nashville Skyline are written by Bob Dylan. Dylan produced the record with Bob Johnston at Columbia Studio A in Nashville and sang in a soft country croon described as a radically new singing voice, which Wikipedia attributes in part to his having temporarily quit smoking. The opening track, a re-recording of Girl from the North Country, is a duet with Johnny Cash, who contributed vocals and guitar.
Released April 9, 1969 and produced by Bob Johnston, the album represents Dylan's fullest immersion in country music, recorded in Nashville with seasoned country session players and featuring a guest duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl from the North Country." All tracks are original Dylan compositions built on simple, melodic country song structures, and Dylan's vocal delivery was noticeably transformed, a softer, smoother croon he attributed partly to having quit smoking. The accessible, warm-toned country sound was a deliberate departure from the surrealist complexity of his mid-1960s work, and critics praised the charm with which Dylan exploited subtle emotional variations on a deliberately limited verbal scale. Commercially it was a major success: it reached No. 3 on the US Billboard 200, became Dylan's fourth UK No. 1 album, and yielded "Lay Lady Lay," which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100; it is certified platinum in the US.
