By the Numbers
Good as I Been to You is composed entirely of traditional folk and blues songs and covers, so Bob Dylan wrote none of the material; he is credited only with the arrangements. It is a solo acoustic album of voice, guitar, and harmonica, his first all-acoustic record since the 1960s. Sources for the songs include Mississippi John Hurt, Stephen Foster, Blind Blake, and the traditional repertoire.
Released November 3, 1992, Good as I Been to You was a deliberate return to acoustic folk after the commercially weak Under the Red Sky, produced by Debbie Gold and recorded in late July through early August 1992 at Dylan's Malibu garage studio. The album contains no original compositions, every track is a traditional folk song, blues standard, or classic cover, with arrangements credited to Dylan. The stripped-down format, vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, was comparable to the acoustic sets Dylan was performing on his Never Ending Tour. Critical response was warm: Rolling Stone awarded four out of five stars, praising its stripped-down intensity, and David Bowie cited it as having great class. It charted at number 51 in the US and number 18 in the UK.
