By the Numbers
Shadows in the Night is a covers album of ten pop standards associated with Frank Sinatra, so Bob Dylan wrote none of the songs. Dylan produced it under his Jack Frost pseudonym and recorded it live with his touring band at Capitol Studios. The selections come from Sinatra's late-1950s and early-1960s albums about loneliness.
Released February 3, 2015, Shadows in the Night was recorded in 2014 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, the same room where Frank Sinatra made many of his classic recordings. Dylan self-produced under the Jack Frost pseudonym, and all ten tracks are covers of pop standards that Sinatra had recorded on his late-1950s and early-1960s thematic albums, with compositions by Irving Berlin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers, and others. The arrangements are spare and melancholy, built around Donny Herron's pedal-steel guitar and Tony Garnier's bass rather than big-band brass. The album earned a Metacritic score of 82 and debuted at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, making 73-year-old Dylan the oldest male solo artist to achieve that distinction, while reaching number 7 on the US Billboard 200.
