Data Insight

Most of One Piece at a Time was written by Johnny Cash himself, including 'Mountain Lady,' 'Michigan City Howdy Do,' 'Sold Out of Flag Poles,' 'Committed to Parkview,' and 'Daughter of a Railroad Man,' with 'Let There Be Country' co-written with Shel Silverstein. The famous title track, however, is the work of outside writer Wayne Kemp, a talking-blues novelty in the vein of Cash's earlier 'A Boy Named Sue.' The album also features 'In a Young Girl's Mind' by Hoyt Axton and Mark Dawson and 'Love Has Lost Again' by his daughter Rosanne Cash.

"One Piece at a Time" is a 1976 country album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records and produced by Charlie Bragg and Don Davis. The album is anchored by its Wayne Kemp-written title track, a novelty hit about an auto worker assembling a Cadillac from smuggled assembly-line parts, which topped the country chart and reached number 29 on the Hot 100. Other songs include "Sold Out of Flag Poles," the Shel Silverstein co-write "Let There Be Country," "Committed to Parkview," and "Love Has Lost Again," written by Cash's daughter Rosanne Cash. The record was credited to Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three, the first use of that billing since the 1960s. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard Country LPs chart and number 185 on the Billboard 200.
