By the Numbers
The album's comedy material was driven by Cash's longtime associate Jack Clement, who wrote four of the eleven tracks, including both novelty singles 'Everybody Loves a Nut' and 'The One on the Right Is on the Left,' plus 'Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog,' and co-wrote 'Take Me Home' with Allen Reynolds. Shel Silverstein contributed 'Boa Constrictor.' Cash himself wrote three originals: 'The Bug That Tried to Crawl Around the World,' 'Austin Prison,' and 'Please Don't Play Red River Valley.' The remaining tracks came from outside writers, including Ramblin' Jack Elliott ('A Cup of Coffee').
"Everybody Loves a Nut" is a 1966 country and novelty album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records and produced by Don Law and Frank Jones. The record consists largely of humorous material, including the title track, "The One on the Right Is on the Left," "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog," and "Boa Constrictor." Cash was backed by Luther Perkins on guitar, Marshall Grant on bass, W.S. Holland on drums, and Del Wood on piano, with guest appearances from the Carter Family. The album reached number 88 on the Billboard 200 and number 28 on the UK Albums Chart, while "The One on the Right Is on the Left" climbed to number 2 on the country singles chart. The cover art was created by cartoonist Jack Davis, and Cash later revived several of these songs on television, including The Johnny Cash Show and The Muppet Show.
