Man in Black is the twenty-ninth studio album by Johnny Cash, released in May 1971 on Columbia Records and produced by Bob Johnston, the album whose title track became the defining statement of Cash's public identity and one of the most recognizable songs in country music history, articulating the Man in Black persona as a deliberate political and social statement rather than simply a visual aesthetic choice. Cash wrote the title track, 'Man in Black,' a direct explanation of why he wears black ('For the poor and the beaten down / Livin' in the hopeless hungry side of town'), along with several other tracks, including 'I Walk the Line (Reprise),' 'Singin' in Vietnam Talkin' Blues,' and 'Little Bit of Yesterday.' Bob Johnston's production, he had also produced Dylan's Nashville Skyline and Blonde on Blonde, connected Cash's social commentary to the broader country-rock and Americana aesthetic of the era. The album reached number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart and the title track reached number three on the Country Singles chart while crossing to the pop chart; 'Man in Black' has been certified platinum in the United States. The album represents the clearest articulation of Cash's self-understanding as a political figure: the black-clad prison performer and advocate for the poor and incarcerated as a deliberate moral stance, expressed directly and without irony.
