Rainbow finds Johnny Cash again working mostly with outside material, contributing two of his own compositions in 'I'm Leaving Now' and 'You Beat All I Ever Saw.' The remaining songs draw on a strong roster of writers Cash favored: Kris Kristofferson ('Here Comes That Rainbow Again' and 'Casey's Last Ride'), Willie Nelson ('They're All the Same'), John Fogerty ('Have You Ever Seen the Rain?'), and Bobby Braddock and John Prine ('Unwed Fathers'). Produced by Chips Moman, it was one of Cash's final and lowest-selling Columbia albums before the label dropped him.
Rainbow is a 1985 country album by Johnny Cash, released October 28 on Columbia Records and produced by Chips Moman. It was Cash's final album for Columbia, the label he had recorded with since 1958. The record leans on outside material, including the Kris Kristofferson songs "Here Comes That Rainbow Again" and "Casey's Last Ride," a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," and the Cash original single "I'm Leaving Now." Following this album and a 1986 duet record with Waylon Jennings, Cash moved to Mercury Records as Columbia's interest in his music faded. Several of its songs would later be revisited in the spirit of his American Recordings series.
