By the Numbers
Johnny Cash leaned heavily on outside writers for this record, contributing only a couple of his own compositions in 'Kentucky Straight' and 'Country Trash.' The title track came from Dick Feller, 'Oney' from Jerry Chesnut, and 'The Loving Gift' from Kris Kristofferson, while the album also folds in a cover of Lee Hays and Pete Seeger's 'If I Had a Hammer.' Cash later returned to his own 'Country Trash,' re-recording it nearly three decades on for American III: Solitary Man.
"Any Old Wind That Blows" is a 1973 country and folk album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records and produced by Larry Butler. The album includes the Dick Feller title track, the Jerry Chesnut song "Oney," the Pete Seeger and Lee Hays standard "If I Had a Hammer" with June Carter Cash, and "Country Trash," which Cash later re-recorded for "American III: Solitary Man." Cash was backed by guitarists Bob Wootton and Carl Perkins, Marshall Grant on bass, W.S. Holland on drums, and Charlie McCoy on harmonica, with the Carter Family and the Statler Brothers on backing vocals. The album reached number 5 on the country charts, and "Oney" became its biggest single at number 2 on the country singles chart. The record showed Cash's continued commercial strength in the early 1970s.
