Jed is still firmly a punk record written by the band, with Robby Takac singing most of the leads and John Rzeznik taking "Up Yours" and "James Dean." The two covers, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Down on the Corner" and the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter," sit alongside band-written originals. Armand John Petri co-produced, beginning a longer working relationship with the group.
Jed came out on Metal Blade on February 22, 1989, recorded again at Trackmaster Audio in Buffalo with Armand John Petri co-producing. Robby Takac still sings most of it, but John Rzeznik takes the lead on 'Up Yours' and 'James Dean,' his first vocals on a Goo Goo Dolls record. The band wrote everything except two covers, Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Down on the Corner' and the Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter.' The album is named for the painter Jed Jackson, Takac's art teacher at Medaille College, whose canvas 'Arkansas Sunset' is the cover.
