By the Numbers
Magnetic is the band's most co-written album, with John Rzeznik bringing in a roster of outside collaborators including Gregg Wattenberg, John Shanks, J.T. Harding, and Greg Wells. The result is a bright, contemporary pop-rock sound led by the single "Rebel Beat," while Robby Takac contributes his usual handful of songs. It marked a deliberate move toward modern radio production.
Magnetic was recorded between August 2012 and February 2013 at Henson in Hollywood and Quad in New York, and released by Warner Bros. in June 2013. Four producers worked on it, Rob Cavallo, John Shanks, Gregg Wattenberg and Greg Wells, and John Rzeznik brought in more outside co-writers than on any earlier Goo Goo Dolls record. It reached number eight on the Billboard 200. Mike Malinin left that December, making this the last album with him on drums, and Rzeznik settled on the one-word title during a phone call with his manager.
