Dizzy Up the Girl is the band's commercial peak, built around John Rzeznik's writing on the era-defining ballad "Iris," first heard on the City of Angels soundtrack. Rzeznik wrote the run of hit singles, "Iris," "Slide," and "Black Balloon," while Robby Takac contributed a handful of his own songs. Rob Cavallo's polished production helped the album reach 5× Platinum certification in the US and earned "Iris" three Grammy nominations.
Dizzy Up the Girl was released on Warner Bros. on September 22, 1998 and is the band's biggest album, certified five times platinum in the US. Rob Cavallo produced with the band, and it was the first record with drummer Mike Malinin. 'Iris,' written for the City of Angels soundtrack, went to number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and held there for 18 weeks, a record that stood until the Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights' in 2020, and it drew three Grammy nominations. Four singles reached the Billboard top 40: 'Slide' at eight, 'Iris' at nine, 'Black Balloon' at 16 and 'Broadway' at 24.
