By the Numbers
The Goo Goo Dolls' raw, punk-rooted debut is a band effort, with John Rzeznik and Robby Takac writing the originals years before their balladeer reputation. It leans hard into noisy punk and includes two covers, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Self-produced and rough, it bears little resemblance to the polished rock they later became known for.
The band's debut came out on Mercenary and Celluloid on June 9, 1987, cut at Trackmaster Audio in their hometown of Buffalo on a budget of $750. Robby Takac sings every track; John Rzeznik would not take a lead vocal until the next record. Fourteen songs of hardcore punk run 34 minutes, with covers of Cream's 'Sunshine of Your Love' and Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear the Reaper' among the band originals. Charly Acquisitions reissued it to streaming in December 2013 under the title Made to Be Broken.
