By the Numbers
Superstar Car Wash is the band's major-label step up, and its writing is almost entirely in-house: every song is credited to John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and George Tutuska except "We Are the Normal," co-written with the Replacements' Paul Westerberg through the mail. The critically acclaimed album sharpens their melodic alternative rock and was the last to feature founding drummer Tutuska. It set up their commercial breakthrough two years later.
Superstar Car Wash was the band's first album for Warner Bros., released on February 23, 1993 and produced by Gavin MacKillop across studios in Mississauga, Buffalo and Burbank. Everything is credited to John Rzeznik, Robby Takac and drummer George Tutuska except 'We Are the Normal,' which Rzeznik wrote with Paul Westerberg of the Replacements by mail, the two never meeting in a studio. It was the last album with Tutuska, and the title comes from a real car wash on William Street in Buffalo.
