Gutterflower follows the blockbuster Dizzy Up the Girl with the same split: John Rzeznik writes the singles "Here Is Gone" and "Big Machine," while Robby Takac contributes several of his own rockers. Rob Cavallo again produced. It went Gold rather than multi-Platinum, a step down commercially but a continuation of the band's polished alternative rock.
Gutterflower was recorded between August and December 2001 at Icon and Capitol in Hollywood and the House of Blues studio in Encino, and released on Warner Bros. on April 9, 2002. It reached number four on the Billboard 200, the band's highest chart placing, but sold to gold rather than the multi-platinum of the two albums before it. Rob Cavallo produced again with the band. 'Here Is Gone' and 'Big Machine' were the only singles, with a promotional video also made for 'Sympathy.'
