By the Numbers
Authorship on Desire Walks On splits three ways. Ann and Nancy Wilson wrote or co-wrote most of the record, often with longtime collaborator Sue Ennis, and pulled in outside writers such as Lisa Dalbello, Kit Hain, Amy Sky, and John Capek on individual tracks. Two songs come entirely from outside the band: 'The Woman in Me' by Michael Clark and John Bettis, and the single 'Will You Be There (In the Morning)' by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange. The album also includes a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Ring Them Bells.' The composer column carries the Wilsons' legal names, Ann Dustin Wilson and Nancy Lamoureux Wilson, where they differ from the credited stage names.
Desire Walks On is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Heart, released November 16, 1993 on Capitol Records. It pairs Ann and Nancy Wilson originals with a set of outside co-writes and two covers, produced by John Purdell and Duane Baron. Ann Wilson sings lead throughout, backed by Nancy Wilson and Howard Leese on guitars and longtime drummer Denny Carmassi, with Schuyler Deale on bass and John Purdell on keyboards. The record leans harder and more contemporary than the band's late-1980s pop-rock, taking in hard rock, folk textures, and a string section on several tracks. Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley adds a third lead vocal to the Bob Dylan cover 'Ring Them Bells,' and Robert John 'Mutt' Lange supplied the single 'Will You Be There (In the Morning).' It reached number 48 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by the RIAA, the band's final studio album with the Leese-Carmassi lineup.
