By the Numbers
Beautiful Broken is best understood as a re-recording project with two new songs bolted on. Only 'Two,' written by Ne-Yo with Jesse Wilson and Adam Waldman, and 'I Jump,' written by the Wilsons with Dan Rothchild, are new. The other eight are re-cut versions of older Wilson-written material: 'Sweet Darlin'' and 'Down on Me' come from Bebe le Strange (1980); 'Johnny Moon' and 'Language of Love' from Passionworks (1983); 'City's Burning' and 'One Word' from Private Audition (1982); 'Heaven' from the live Alive in Seattle era; and the title track from the Fanatic (2012) deluxe edition, now carrying James Hetfield's guest vocal. The composer column uses the writers' legal names where they differ from stage names, so Ann Dustin Wilson and Nancy Lamoureux Wilson anchor most songs, with Ne-Yo appearing as Shaffer Chimere Smith and Hetfield as James Alan Hetfield on the title track. Sue Ennis, the Wilsons' long-time co-writer, is credited across the Passionworks and Private Audition re-recordings.
Beautiful Broken is the sixteenth studio album by American rock band Heart, released July 8, 2016, on Concord Records and the last studio album issued by the Ann and Nancy Wilson lineup to date. The record is built around two brand-new songs, 'Two' and 'I Jump,' surrounded by fresh full-band re-recordings of deep cuts pulled from Heart's early-1980s catalog. Ann Wilson sings lead throughout, backed by Nancy Wilson on guitars and vocals, Craig Bartock and Dan Rothchild, drummer Ben Smith, and keyboardist Chris Joyner, with Rothchild and Nancy Wilson producing. The title track reworks a song first heard on the deluxe edition of 2012's Fanatic and adds a guest vocal from James Hetfield of Metallica, whose part was engineered by Greg Fidelman. Several tracks feature orchestral strings arranged by Paul Buckmaster and recorded in Budapest, giving the older songs a heavier, more cinematic treatment than their original versions.
