By the Numbers
The songwriting on Dreamboat Annie belongs almost entirely to the Wilson sisters. Both breakout hits, 'Crazy on You' and 'Magic Man,' are credited to Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson, and that same pair wrote most of the record. Guitarist Roger Fisher shaped the acoustic intro riff of 'Crazy on You' during the sessions but is not listed as a credited writer on it. The band's rhythm section steps into the writing only on 'Sing Child,' which adds Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher alongside the Wilsons, while 'How Deep It Goes' is Ann Wilson's alone.
Dreamboat Annie is the debut studio album by Heart, first issued in Canada in September 1975 and released in the United States on February 14, 1976 through Mushroom Records. Fronted by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, it was recorded at Can-Base Studios in Vancouver with producer Mike Flicker and built its sound on the contrast between Ann Wilson's powerhouse lead vocals and Nancy Wilson's acoustic and electric guitar work. The record moved between hard rock and folk-tinged ballads, and its two signature tracks, 'Crazy on You' and 'Magic Man,' became staples of North American FM radio. 'Magic Man' rose to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave the band its first US top ten hit, while the album peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 200. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA and launched one of rock's most enduring careers.
